We are a small not-for-profit educational corporation doing research on spiritual life. Twelve years ago we began asking two questions about spiritual healing: (1) what words do you associate to the words, "spiritual healing" and (2) what stories do you tell about spiritual healing from your own experience or the experience of someone you know. Today, our study includes over 150 mainstream, interfaith congregations and more than 3,000 people in Protestant, Catholic, and Reform Jewish communities all over the United States.
In our study, people told us they had experienced the presence or action of God in their lives which was transforming and that meant God became real to them.
What's more, there were no socio-economic, gender, geographic, ethnic, creedal or religious differences in their stories. They were universally the same and also totally individual! But they were invisible to the people around them because they rarely, if ever, talked about this experience which may have been the most important event in their lives.
George Gallup Jr. of Gallup Poll fame says of our study, "The authors have given us new and fresh insight into the action and presence of God in human existence. Their writing represents a clear and lively portrait of the baseline dimensions of spirituality of the U.S. population."
